Ask us directly What is the difference between Power BI and Excel?
Excel is a spreadsheet for editing and calculating data; Power BI is a BI platform that brings multiple data sources together into interactive dashboards that refresh themselves. Where Excel stalls on large files and manual copying, Power BI connects your systems once and updates automatically from then on.
Do we need a data warehouse?
With one or two data sources, usually not. Power BI connects to them directly. From three sources onward, or as soon as the same terms are defined differently across systems, a data warehouse becomes sensible, because otherwise every report has to be reconciled by hand. You can start without one and add it later.
Is our data safe in Power BI and Azure?
Yes. Since 2023 Microsoft operates an EU data boundary, so business data from European customers is stored and processed within Europe. Data is encrypted at rest, you choose the region yourself, and row-level security lets you control exactly who sees which figures.
What do Power BI licences cost?
Power BI offers a free tier, a Pro licence per user per month, and heavier options for larger organisations. Anyone who wants to share or view a dashboard generally needs at least Pro. Microsoft adjusts its rates periodically, so always check the official Microsoft price list for current figures.
What is the difference between business intelligence and data analysis?
Data analysis is examining a dataset to answer a specific question; business intelligence is the permanent system that keeps delivering those insights to the people making decisions. Analysis is a project, BI is a facility that keeps running.
Is Power BI suitable for smaller companies?
Yes, and that is often where the effect is largest. You can start with one dashboard on one data source and grow from there, without your own servers or a BI department. Most SMEs we work with start with sales, finance or production and expand from there.
